Short Introduction
The three main forms of artwork I specialize in are: Intarsia, 3D Sculptures, and Wood-Burning, which is also known as Pyrography. The theme of my wood art varies from: animals (pets, farm, & wild-life), to life-like people, depictions of religious events, parables, buildings, business logos, oriental, insect, fairy-tale, wedding cake toppers, and much more!
What is Intarsia?
The word Intarsia means "Pictures in Wood" it is a semi-three dimensional (2.5D) carving that hangs on the wall. Every portrait and sculpture is made from many different colored species of wood/trees. To put it into a term you might be more familiar with; wood is to Intarsia, as paint is to a painter. Painters use colors to bring art to life; whereas I use nature's natural wood colors to highlight my subject’s essence and beauty. There is more to my art work than just what color woods are used. The direction of the wood grain and pattern helps to create depth, character, texture, and contrast. No stains or paints are used on my Intarsia pieces. There are different tree fungi, mold, and rots that can give wood wonderful colors, such as grayish-blue, oranges, reds, blacks and much more. These are normally found in logs I personally mill and are not sold at common wood stores. That means the cost can be higher if certain woods are desired over standard planed lumber.
Please checkout my Intarsia page for more images of my artwork.
What is Wood-Burning/Pyrography?
Pyrography or Wood Burning means "Writing with Fire." Each portrait is drawn free-hand through the traditional art of using a heated tip or wire to burn designs onto wood. A large range of tones and shades can be achieved by varying the type of tip used, the temperature, and the way the artist applies the iron to create different effects. No lasers, computers, or any kind of printers are used to burn the images onto the wood. The most common wood I like to use is Basswood, then Aspin pine. The price varies depending of the difficulty and detail of the picture being burnt.
